Ambewela City

Ambewela is one of the most beautiful towns that Sri Lanka boasts of and it’s situated in the Nuwara Eliya district about 17km away from the city centre of Nuwara Eliya. Ambewela has some of the highest and widest grasslands of Sri Lanka while it is located at an altitude of more than 6000 ft.

Sometimes referred to as the “Little New Zealand”, Ambewela is located en route to the Horton Plains National Park which is a well known attraction in the Central Highlands. Ambewela which has a similar climate to Horton Plains and Ohiya is known as one of the important Bird Areas in the island making it a much visited location for bird watching activities.

Ambewela’s climatic as well as economic conditions make it the perfect location for dairy farming while the island’s only milk powder factory is located here as well. The Ambewela Farm and the New Zealand Farm which are the two animal husbandries rear the world renowned Ayrshire cattle and Friesian cows respectively. Visits to the farms are suggested since you can walk about these lands and experience the farming procedures which are conducted according to high standards. In addition to cattle, they have other farmyard animals such as pigs, goats and rabbits along with vegetable patches, as well as a cheese and yoghurt factory.

There are many places that you can visit when exploring the Ambewela region. The Ambewela Reservoir is closer to the farms while the Kande Ela Lake offers boat services. However, bathing is prohibited in both areas due to strong currents. About 3km away from the Ambewela Railway, a hike will take you to the Elgin Falls. Vehicles are not allowed while you can enjoy a nature trek up to the falls.
